The shipment of the display panel for virtual reality (VR) will reach the first ten million levels in 2022. This year, a total of 15.8 million panels are expected to enter VR applications. It is worth noting that most VR headsets currently use LCD panel technology. The OLED, which has just surpassed LCD for the first time in the small and medium -sized panel revenue, seems to be “early and rushing for a late collection” in the VR market, which is absent from this wave of industry.
Judging from the current application of the VR market, the LCD display firmly occupies the mainstream position. According to IDC data, in 2021, the global VR header showed a number of out -of -the -art overalls in the world, which exceeded the important inflection point of the industry with an annual shipment of 10 million units. Among them, Oculus share reached 80%. The reporter learned that Oculusquest 2, which uses the LCD screen, carries the flag of sales. It has been on the market for more than 10 million units, and the new generation of Pico, DPVR, and HTC also uses LCD screens. In contrast, in terms of OLED, although AMOLED and Silicon -based OLED (OLEDOS) also have their own characteristics, the two are not widely accepted in VR headset devices.
Industry experts told reporters that from the perspective of VR/AR hardware products, the reduction of cost and the improvement of user experience are the two most important factors. It is understood that the hardware part of a VR/AR terminal device is mainly composed of processors, storage, screens, optical devices, acoustic devices, shells, and auxiliary materials. Among them, the screen is the primary factor affecting the user experience, and high resolution is the core element of VR display. If the screen resolution is insufficient, users can easily cause bad experience when wearing VR devices.
In fact, around 2016, AMOLED was the first choice for VR equipment manufacturers, mainly due to the characteristics of delay. However, after 2018, the response speed of LCD technology has also been improved, and LCD still has a significant cost advantage, so manufacturers have begun to tilt to LCD.
Cinnoresearch senior analyst Liu Yushi said in an interview with the China Electronics News that the pixel density required for VR products is high, and AMOLED is limited to the FMM accuracy limit to make very high pixel density, and the cost is also high. The brightness and pixel density of the silicon -based OLED are very good, but on the one hand, the cost of large -scale silicon substrates is high. On the other hand, using smaller silicon wafers requires more complicated optical design. For high -end VR products.
Yang Tingting, the general manager of the business VR/AR BU general manager, told the China Electronics News reporter that the glass -based AMOLED is subject to the FMM process. The pixel size is not small. The silicon -based AMOLED is limited by optical lens capabilities. It cannot be too small, and the expensive price of silicon wafers leads to high cost. It is currently applied to high -end VR products. “With the development of technology and market in the future, if the Silicon -based OLED is cost -effective, it will set off a revolutionary outbreak. At present, LCD is the best solution for the price -performance ratio and production capacity can be guaranteed.”
In the future, the silicon -based OLED is expected to gradually change its absence in the VR/AR field. According to statistics from Cinno Research, the size of the global AR/VR silicon -based OLED display panel market in 2021 was about $ 64 million. In the future, with the development of the AR/ VR industry and the further penetration of silicon -based OLED technology, it is estimated that by 2025, the growth rate of global AR/ VR silicon -based OLED display panel market will reach an average annual growth rate of 119%.
